Library Welcomes New Director
For immediate release
December 14, 2011
The Grande Prairie Public Library Board today announced the appointment of Dawn Silver as the new Library Director.
Ms. Silver was chosen from a field of 7 applicants from across North America. “As the Library continues to grow, we were looking for a proven leader - we believe we’ve found that in Dawn,” says Wade Nellis, Vice Chair and a member of the Human Resources Committee.
Silver holds a bachelor’s degree in the classics from the University of Alberta and a Masters of Library and Information Studies from the University of British Columbia. She has held senior management positions at the Fraser Valley Regional Library, Okanagan Regional Library and was most recently CEO at the Orillia Public Library.
“Dawn’s experience showed us that she has the tenacity to ensure that the needs of her staff and customers are met,” says Nellis. “We felt these were valuable qualities and a perfect fit for our Library.”
As an avid reader, Silver has always been involved with libraries. “I volunteered as a young child,” she says. “I credit my grandmother for reading to me and sharing her love of books.” Although she may have a more traditional history with libraries, Silver doesn’t see herself as a stereotypical librarian. “I’m not old-fashioned,” she says. “I’m more entrepreneurial in nature and believe that our role in the community is always evolving.”
Current staff have already made an impact on the new Director. “The Library has dynamic, enthusiastic and creative staff who are the trustees for our customers, stakeholders and supporters,” says Silver. “We can’t help but succeed.”
