Do you geek? If you have a passion for knitting, fitness or vegetarian cooking, then you geek. Or perhaps you enjoy coin collecting or photography? You geek!
Beginning in June, the Grande Prairie Public Library will be participating in a community-based, public awareness campaign called Geek the Library, created by OCLC with a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Geek, used as a verb, means to have an intense passion for. Whatever you are passionate about, your Library supports you.
You may be thinking - the Library doesn't support what I geek, do they? Do you geek skydiving? We happen to have books and videos on that. Lizards? We've got you covered. Broadway show tunes? In the bag! Not only does your Library have books and magazines, but also DVDs, audiobooks, e-Books, CDs and online research tools from hobbies and crafts to music and engine repair. Or learn a new language online with Mango. Be sure to have your Library card handy!
What do Library staff geek? You may be surprised! They geek fairy tales, country music, dragons, opera, motorcycles and trail running. Some like pyrography (the art of woodburning) and mancinism (the condition of being left-handed). You may even share a love for hedgehogs or Macau. Many of us will be wearing our geeks on t-shirts over the next few months. Curious? Be sure to ask us about what we geek!
Visit your Library and the website as Geek the Library unfolds. Discover the possibilities of what you may geek and how the Library can help!
